Truth Tobacco Documents Library - This archive of 14 million pages of documents created by tobacco companies about their advertising, manufacturing, marketing, scientific research and political activities, hosted by the UCSF Library, was my project from its inception to its launch in 2002. As Director of Content and Services, I created the metadata schema, worked with a team of programmers to create the SQL queries by which the XML could serve up documents on the fly, assisted in grant writing to fund the project, supervised the web development of the initial site, trained indexers to add metadata to new collections, trained new users (educators, public health professionals, journalists, graduate students, researchers) to seek and find. This was, and may yet be, the world's largest publicly available digital library. This model has now been extended to present document collections on opioids, fossil fuels, chemicals and drugs.
I also assisted in the development of standards such as the Tobacco Document Citation Format, The Tobacco Document Subject Thesaurus, and the XML schema which integrated the seven original tobacco industry document sets provided in litigation to the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG).
On behalf of the Buffalo Public Schools, I applied for and was awarded Western New York Library Resources (WNYRLC) RBDB grant funding to:
Define technical and metadata project parameters to scan and index Masten Park High School yearbooks (1903-1927)
Coordinate inventory and handoff of physical items to Backstage Library Works
Create and upload metadata via Documentum for scanned items into New York Heritage website
Serve as the only BPS manager and archivist of digital collections
Continue to monitor the physical collection of other historic yearbooks held in the former Nahoma Moss Room at City Honors School
For the California Digital Library (CDL):
Served in an advisory and technical capacity regarding the creation, development and maintenance of a digital repository environment for scholars and researchers in the field of tobacco control.
Administrated and maintained repository site
